RE: I need some opinions on tires.

Well thanks again for all of the great input. I ended up going with the Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor. It may be a mistake but the reviews where good and the 70K tread life warranty helps with the number of miles I drive per day. I bought them from DiscountTireDirect.com for $552 with no sales tax and free shipping. The next closest quote was $740 out the door so If I can get them mounted and balanced for less than $180 I'll save some money.
I called one of the local Discount Tire stores to see if he would lower his price any but all he said was that if I didn't buy them from him he would charge twice as much to install them. I don't believe I'll be visiting his store any time soon.

RE: I need some opinions on tires.

Thanks for all of the great advice and opinions!
The tire size I need is 235/65/17 which seems to be an expensive size. The Michelins start at about $180 and go up from there. I'll check out some of the others mentioned. The Goodyear Fortera sounds interesting with the high consumer rating but the BFG's I'm sure are considerably cheaper.
Thanks again!

RE: Storage and Putting Something Under Your Tires

I park mine for the winter on the plastic Lego style leveling blocks. They don't wick moisture from the ground and due to the Lego design there are channels that allow water to run away from the tire. I did park on boards but noticed every spring that the boards were slimy wet with moisture. I don't know if it really makes any difference but I feel better.
Good luck and happy camping!

I need some opinions on tires.

I have a Jeep Liberty that needs new tires and I need some opinions.
I drive about 115 highway miles a day sometimes on snow and ice so I need an all terrain tire that will endure a lot of miles. I'm not totally against putting the Goodyear Wrangler HP's back on it but can't help but think that there are some better options for a reasonable price.
Please tell me about your real world experience with light truck or SUV tires. Every manufacturers web page tells me their the best but I need to know what kind of miles and performance I can really expect.
Thank you for your help and happy camping!

RE: passed up the bighorn

Did you trade in your HR on the Carriage? I tried trading this spring and couldn't get anything for my trade. I'm just wondering if they are starting to deal a little more now that the slow season is fast approaching around here.
By the way congrats on the Carriage!

RE: Frame damage and possible repair?

I talked to my parents last night and got an update on their 5th wheel.
Their insurance agent called and asked them to get a quote on repairing the frame. They called several RV repair shops in their area and nobody would even consider working on it with a bent frame. Their insurance agent said they would just total it out then. Now all they have to do is settle on a value.
I'm not sure what the insurance company will do with the unit once the claim has been paid. I know on autos most will give you the option to buy it back for next to nothing. If given that option it sure would make a great seasonl site 5th wheel or lake/river cabin.
Thanks again!

RE: Tow speed

I generally run around 62 on the interstate and 55 on other highways. The only time I will exceed those speeds is when I see a steep grade ahead. With a little run at it I can maintain a safe speed without running the truck too hard.
Good luck and happy camping!

RE: Frame damage and possible repair?

Thanks for all of the great advice and opinions! You have mentioned some things that my dad and I haven't thought of. We inspected what we could see of the pin box but most of the structure is enclosed.
I know they were interested in trading for a new toy hauler last fall but couldn't get a decent dollar amount for their trade. As long as the insurance company will give them market value I'm sure they would rather it was totaled and buy a new one rather than worry about the repairs being done correctly.
After the accident I pulled it the rest of the way to the campground for them and they stayed in it for a week while the truck was being repaired to the point that it could be driven. Most all of the major systems were working but who knows what will continue to show up over time. I'm sure that they haven't thought about the depreciated value due to being in and accident on both vehicles.
Their insurance company sent someone out to inspect the damage and as I said in my original post, frame replacement was mentioned but they haven't heard anything definite yet. I'll let everybody know what the results are as soon as they hear anything.
Thanks again for all of the great replies!

RE: Frame damage and possible repair?

In the auto typically frame damage means total. I am not sure what the insurance company would do with an RV. But I would think if they could put the RV on a new frame it should be fine.
I'm sure they'll treat an RV differently than an auto. I know he wouldn't be too upset if they would total it and give him market value for it. I just can't see how they could replace the frame. Aren't RV's built like house trailers where they start with the frame and attach everything down from the top?

Frame damage and possible repair?

Well a couple of weeks ago my parents were involved in an accident while pulling their 2002 40' PlayMor 5th wheel. Thankfully nobody was hurt.
A lady pulled out in front of them and they T-boned her doing about 50 MPH. After the impact the steering was damaged in the truck and they jumped a curb between the lanes on 2 wheels and then went thru a ditch. The front of the truck was heavily damaged but the 5th wheel looked fine until we hooked my truck to it and pulled it on into the campground.
I noticed that when I hit large dips in the road or made sharp corners smoke was rolling off of the tires on one side. It turns out that either the curb or the ditch bottomed out the suspension so hard that the axles hit the bottom of the frame and actually caused it to buckle directly above the rear axle. This is a toy hauler model with at least a 12" I-beam frame.
His insurance company mentioned repairing or replacing the frame rails. I personally don't see how that could be done. Has anybody ever heard of or experienced any kind of frame repair or replacement on an RV?
Thanks!

RE: Locking wheel chocks

One more thing about Rotochoks is that they can be reconfigured for different tire spacing should you decide to change rigs. (For a small fee of course.) I've had both the BAL deluxe and Rotochoks. Both work great but the BAL won't fit all tire spacing.

RE: stabilizer jack BROKE - will Keystone replace?

It looks like that's a 31'2" camper. That means when you lift one side to level it with the stabilizers there's probably a 28' span of unsupported RV. By leveling with boards under the tires then lowering the stabilizers you cut the span to less than half of that. This will make for a more stable setup and put less strain on your RV and stabilizers.

RE: stabilizer jack BROKE - will Keystone replace?

You should level the RV side-to-side with boards or leveling blocks under the low side tires. Then level front to back with the front jack or landing gear. Use the stabilizers as intended with a small amount of pressure.
Most likely your RV frame is not designed to hold the weight of your rig when only supported at the ends. You would have to check with your manufacturer but doing this could possibly cause frame failure and even void your warranty.

RE: Anyone slowing down to save on gas?

I drive a Jeep Liberty 120 miles a day round trip to work. Running 73 MPH and accelerating normal I average right around 20 MPG. I slowed down to 65 MPH and keep my RPM's under 2500 on acceleration and now get right at 25 MPG.
I haven't really changed my driving habits while towing but we generally camp fairly close to home and a tank of fuel in the truck will last 4 or 5 trips.

RE: new awning

I replaced my A&E with a Carefree a couple of years ago. I called Carefree and they said I could order it in any length in one inch increments. They told me where to measure and the replacement fit perfectly in the old holes. I can't remember exactly where they told me to measure from but I do know that there was no extra charge to get the length I needed.
Good luck and happy camping!

RE: Please help me sell my RV!!!!!!!

Thanks for the comments.
I do have a dealer that is willing to arrange financing for anyone who buys our unit and they will apply our selling price toward the new unit to reduce sales tax. Not a bad deal.
I'm really not in that big of a hurry other than having the itch for a new unit. I've had a couple of dealers wanting to sell it on consignment but we'll be starting our camping season shortly with or without a new camper.
I'll have to look into listing it on eBay. I've bought several items but never sold anything.
Thanks again!

Please help me sell my RV!!!!!!!

No, I don't want to sell due to high gas/fuel prices. My only reason for selling is because we really, really, really want to buy a KZ Inferno 3912. There's nothing wrong with the RV we've got but we want the bunks and loft that a toy hauler has to offer.
In your opinion what is the best resource to sell a used RV?
Dealers are extremely willing to deal on a new unit but only willing to pay low wholesale on a trade. I don't mind selling for a little less than payoff but I won't give it away. I've listed it on the classifieds here and on craigslist but wanted your opinion on the best online resources.
Thanks in advance and happy camping!
